SailProof tablets are excellent devices to run navigation Apps, in fact they are design around them. Navionics is no exemption and our tables will handle the App effortlessly with their strong processing powers and large memory. Whilst the bright screen and large battery will provide an uninterrupted user experience.
But sometimes problems can arise, but don’t worry, mostly they are easily solvable. If you are experiencing trouble with the Navionics app, it most likely caused by the App itself (login problems, missing updates, subscription issues) or simply some sort of bug that prevents smooth operation. Most of the time a simple restart of your device, clearing the cache and memory or re-installing the App will do the trick, more instructions here.
The App sometimes can take very long to load. This can happen if an active but slow internet connection is detected on the tablet, causing the App to take a very long time to start, as it tries to update maps and verify login, but the slow internet is delaying the process. Same can sometimes happen when connected to WiFi network that contains only AIS or NMEA signal. The simplest solution is to start the App without any connections to the network and only add it later.
AIS and Navionics, an active subscription will allow you to overlay AIS data that is received via an on board WiFi signal (containing AIS/NMEA info). The configuration is very easy for most AIS/WiFi devices and Navionics offers plenty of guidance here. Android OS might sometimes switch between saved WiFi networks, so if you are running two networks on board (one for internet, one for NMEA data) your tablet might automatically switch to the one with internet, As a result, Navionics will simply stop displaying AIS targets without any warning . This can easily be prevented by going to the tablets WiFi settings and choosing which networks are allowed to auto connect.
Navionics recently started restricting the usage of its App to maximum 2 devices per google account, so make sure before you start your trip to choose which devices you want to use and update the Maps accordingly to avoid surprises into your trip. It is specifically advisable to prepare your Tablet before any longer trip, downloading charts, checking your subscription status and making sure everything is up to date whilst a good internet connection is still available. Downloading maps or updates whilst under way can be slow, expensive and potential dangerous if the process fails.
Navionics at night, when sailing at night, Navionics recently introduced a Night Mode option, same together with the extra dim-able screen will allow for more comfort on night watches without loosing your ‘night vision’.
